Pench National Park, located in the lower southern reaches of the Satpura hills, is named after the Pench River, which flows through the park from north to south. It lies on the southern boundary of Madhya Pradesh, bordering Maharashtra, in the districts of Seoni and Chhindwara.
Pench is India’s first interstate park, spread across two states—Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Covering over 1,400 sq. km, it is a dry deciduous forest dominated by teak trees.
Interestingly, the Pench Tiger Reserve and its surrounding area served as the original setting for Rudyard Kipling’s most renowned work, The Jungle Book. The lush forests, diverse wildlife, and rustic landscapes inspired the timeless tales of Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, and Shere Khan.
